Nepal Earthquake Appeal
Following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake on 25th April and aftershock on 12th May 2015 which caused widespread devastation across Nepal, we are appealing for help in raising funds to relieve distress in our partner villages in the Sailung region of Nepal.
We are working with the communities to support them to rebuild their homes and lives, and need your help.
We have associated with the UK Charity 'Travel Philanthropy' who will channel funds directly to the local NGO in Nepal, ensuring that it is used for these communities. Donations can be made online here or sent by cheque. If sending a cheque, please click here for the donation form which can be printed and posted to Travel Philanthropy.
The chief emergency requirement in our partner communities was shelter. A large number of village houses and school buildings were damaged or had collapsed. With the generous support of our UK travel partner Inntravel and from guest donations, our team in Nepal made urgent arrangements to supply around 1000 tarpaulin shelters for emergency accommodation to Solambu, TekSingh and Pasiban, as well as surrounding villages shortly after the earthquake.
Current situation in Sailung
Many Village Ways guests have generously contributed to the relief fund and the Village Ways Nepal Relief Committee have been working to assess how best to distribute the funds raised so as to benefit the wider communities. A decision was made to fund the reconstruction of Kharpani School - the secondary school that serves our partner villages in Sailung District in Nepal. The children at Kharpani Secondary School have been taking lessons underneath makeshift cover since the earthquake.
Earthquake-proof plans have been drawn up and after a very long wait we have finally got the go ahead to put the funds raised so far into use in rebuilding two classrooms win the secondary school. Materials are now being purchased, and using prefabricated techniques the team in Nepal will be supervising the construction work which is commencing this autumn.
We are still raising funds and require about another £5,000 to complete the task to the best possible standard.
