Your stay in the hills

Your stay starts and ends with a night at the atmospheric and welcoming Khali Estate, where you stay in the comfortable stone ‘round houses’ amidst the trees. Khali Estate is steeped in the history of modern India, having been built by Sir Henry Ramsey, the commissioner of Kumaon, and also belonged to the Nehru family and had connections to Gandhi. From Khali you head through the pine-forest to visit the Binsar villages, all sharing the same simple beauty but with very distinct personalities. You stay in all five villages, with two nights spent in one. You also walk to and stay in a sixth village, Matkanya, which has recently joined the Binsar project, and is located just outside of the Sanctuary. Perched on a ridge high above historic Jageshwar, a stay here gives you the opportunity to visit the the vast and impressive Shiva complex of temples at Jageshwar before returning to Khali. In each community owned village guest house you are received with genuine hospitality by your village hosts. The houses offer simple twin bedroom accommodation. All meals are included throughout your stay, with delicious home-grown vegetarian food and picnic lunches taken when walking. You will be privately guided throughout your stay in the hills.

Walking the paths

This holiday takes in all the high points of the Sanctuary with three to five hours walking, from village to village, each day. You have your own guide and porter throughout. Each day brings fresh surprises and delight. You pass through dense oak and rhododendron forests, with tempting glimpses of valleys below. You ascend steep village paths gaining ever more impressive views of the snow capped mountains beyond. At Zero Point, the highest point in Binsar, ascend the viewing platform for extensive views over the Himalayan peaks, the fortress-like Nanda Devi (7,817 m) is an unforgettable sight.
