Ethiopia, the Northern Highlands
Dramatic mountains, dissected by great rivers, inhabited by dignified, hardworking peoples. 3,000 metre escarpment-top communities, sensational views across a timeless landscape, where birds of prey soar in thermals and gelada baboons scamper down cliffs. In Tigray, for autumn 2013, two new valley guesthouses will be completed by Village Ways to sit alongside the existing and now refurbished escarpment-top guest houses. Wonderful walking circuits are in prospect in this dramatic province.
The Tigray Plateau
Tigray is exceptional for its landscape, history and culture. The highland plateau rises to to its highest in the Simien mountains on the south west of the province, with Ras Dashen (4540 m) the fourth highest mountain in Africa. To the east of the highlands lies the Danakil depression, 100 meters below sea level and one of the lowest and hottest places on earth. Local “hedamo” guesthouses have been developed in four communities in the highlands south of Adigrat. They provide a simple, unforgettable opportunity for guests to immerse themselves in the culture of this ancient civilisation. We are adding two valley communities with new guest houses in 2013 to create a wonderfully rounded experience amongst these hospital villagers.
