From Supi to New York - empowering women in the Indian Himalayas

The Village Ways Charitable Trust is a key partner to Village Ways, and does wonderful work in our partner communities. In recent months, the Trust has overseen the opening of the Supi Community Centre in the Saryu Valley high in the Indian Himalayas, and also helping village women secure work there supplying clothing to the American company LOFT, part of Ann Inc. Ann Inc have been long-term partners of the Trust, as part of the company's commitment to supporting women's lives around the world. You can read more about Ann Inc's programme here and they have produced a lovely short youtube video featuring the Saryu valley and the Supi Community Centre:

The women working on producing goods for LOFT are paid a fair wage, are trained for the work, and work in good conditions at the Community Centre. The income generated supports low-income families, and empowers women. You can buy some of their rather appealing clothes online, and we show one of the caftans below.

The other key role of the Community Centre is to provide a focus for improving women's health in this remote valley, where doctors are many hours' walk away. Doctors will visit the Centre on a monthly basis, and the Trust has initiated a women's health education programme, supported by Ann Inc and the Business for Social Responsibility's HER project.

There is much more about the amazing work being done by the Trust here.
