Tara Singh is 22 years old and lives in Malla Supi, a remote village in the heart of the Saryu Valley in the hills of Kumaon, Uttarakhand, India, overlooked by the snow capped peaks of the Indian Himalayas.
His English, which he learnt at school, is very good. Having completed a BA in history, politics and English literature at Bageshwar, he returned to Supi to the family home and worked on the farm, but he wanted a job. In 2010 he joined Village Ways as a guide. “This was a good opportunity for me”, he recalls, “I needed to work and enjoyed meeting guests, who are all very well behaved”. Tara is married and has a baby girl. He now works part time as a guide and part time on the family farm.
