In the mountains for International Mountain Day

Posted in News on Friday, January 12th, 2018

International Mountain Day was celebrated on 11th Dec at Leeti village, in Bageshwar District, not far from the Village Ways villages in the Saryu Valley of Uttarakhand. The event was organised by a local NGO in collaboration with the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board. Village Ways was invited and we were represented by Deepak Joshi. He participated in the celebrations, which included a cultural programme, talks and games. There were displays of local handicrafts and freshly-picked vegetables and herbs grown by people from the surrounding area.

Deepak obviously enjoyed his visit. He was invited on stage to speak about Village Ways and the training that we shall be organising for the new community tourism teams from Leeti and adjoining villages. He also spoke about his experiences on different training events in Uttarakhand and elsewhere in India.

Deepak was a guide in Binsar from 2006 and then was promoted as Training Officer in 2015. He is very proud to be a part of Village Ways and to have represented us at this event. It is very encouraging to see mountain communities, state tourism boards and NGOs get together in this way, on what is already an important day in the calendar for mountain villages worldwide.
