A fresh view of Kerala

The Goodearth Houseboat is one of our most popular trips, a chance to relax and unwind while exploring the quiet side of the famous Kerala Backwaters, well away from the main tourist boats. Village Ways director Keith Virgo visited the region to meet the local team and check on progress on the houseboat.

“It was a pleasure to make a visit to Vayalar in November to meet some of the Goodearth team. Last year the Kayal Gramodaya (KG) formed a new 16 member Committee, with representatives form each of the communities that manage the houseboat (in Kodamthuruthutu, Vayalar, Chenganda and on Perembulam Island). Gopikrishnan is now the President, Biju is Secretary and Shahji Treasurer. Basheer acts as Meeting Secretary. All agreed that the committee is functioning well.

This summer, they replaced the canopy and repaired some of the hull planking. But their real enthusiasm was reserved for the new, brightly-coloured fore-deck and the stainless steel protective hand rail, which Ponnapen showed with pride.

Meeting other members of the KG and their women’s subcommittee at Chenganda, everyone expressed concern at the fall in guest numbers this year, due to the floods that affected Kerala during the monsoon. The heartfelt sentiment was expressed: “This was the very time when we needed extra income – why did guests not book?”
