Walking in the Himalayas: A Village Ways Travel Guide

Posted in Guest experiences on Wednesday, June 5th, 2019

Walking in the Himalayas is one of the great travel adventures. The towering, snow-capped peaks draw the eye at every turn, and you will never forget their majesty. There are different ways to experience the Himalayas, though, and we offer a unique style of trip, very different to walking in a large group or on busy trekking routes such as the crowded Anapurna Circuit in Nepal.

The best kind of Himalayan walking holiday

There is, though, another way of walking in the Himalayas, and that is with Village Ways. We offer tailor-made trips, where you with your own guide, and stay in village homestays offering simple comfort, authentic hospitality and delicious local cooking. Some of our Himalayan holidays also include stays in fixed, safari-style tents on high mountain passes, perfect places from which to watch sunrise over the Himalayan peaks. Porters from our village communities carry your bags from village to village, meaning you travel light.

India, Nepal or Bhutan?

We love walking throughout the Himalayas, and offer trips to three amazing countries. In India, we launched Village Ways in the wildlife reserve of Binsar, and we return here often to enjoy wonderfully varied and accessible walks. A little further north, close to the border with Tibet, walk in the high villages of Saryu and Pindar – for perhaps the best Himalayan views we offer.

Bhutan is a land of myths, legends and majestic mountains. It has its own distinctive culture, and fascinating, welcoming village communities. Everyone who visits Bhutan returns enchanted!

Nepal offers some of the best walking routes, and our region of Sailung offers incredible Himalayan panoramas, wonderfully welcoming villages and a true sense of wild adventure, so removed from the busy tourist routes.

How do I get there?

For India or Bhutan, Delhi is your best choice. From this great city, we can arrange trains and connecting private road transfers, taking you up into the heart of the Indian Himalayas. For Bhutan, take a short connecting flight from Delhi. To reach Nepal, there are international flights to beautiful, bustling Kathmandu. Most guests overnight in the city before a private road transfer to the province of Sailung and your wonderful walking holiday.

What are the paths like?

Many of the paths used by our guests are ancient footpaths used to connect communities for centuries, and still in use today. Some are made of stone, others cross grass pasture land. They make for wonderful, relaxed walking, with time to enjoy the views and to spot wildlife such as vultures, eagles, woodpeckers, deer and much more.

What makes Village Ways trips special?

With Village Ways, you are hosted by local communities who benefit directly from your stay. You explore in the company of your own local guide, who knows everyone and everything in these villages. You stay in simple but comfortable village homestays, and have a privileged insight into authentic village life. These remain remote, beautiful and pristine places. Come and be inspired!
