Women making a difference for women

Gender equality is hugely important to Village Ways. Our Managing Director, Manisha Pande, is a leading voice in the promotion of sustainable tourism in India. Under her leadership, Village Ways has trained the first female guides to work in the socially conservative valleys of the Indian Himalayas, has assembled an all-female sales team to deliver our trips to international and domestic guests, and has fought for female representation on village committees in all our regions. Manisha recognised early that our kind of community tourism would offer opportunities to women to work and to supplement family incomes.

The Village Ways Charitable Trust works to support our partner communities in many different ways. The head trustee, Ratnamala Kapur, is another dynamic leader who has helped the Trust since its launch, and has been pivotal in its pioneering work on women’s health and opportunity in the remote valleys of the Indian Himalayas. Ratnamala helped secure the partnerships with Ann Inc and the BSR’s HERProject to deliver a long-term programme aimed at improving women’s health through peer educators and, ongoing, access to tele-medicine. Manisha and Ratnamala are inspiring leaders, but just as inspirational are the women in our partner communities, who have battled against economic and social challenges to take on new roles and responsibilities, helping their families and their villages. Social change from the ground up is a powerful force, and we salute these women, and thank them for everything they do.
